Inside Lacrosse Magazine Cornell 10, Hobart 7.

The last time the Cornell lacrosse team had a game, it was the national championship against Syracuse. They lost that game in overtime on a marker from Cody Jamieson, but they got the victory today.

The Big Red defeated the Statesmen of Hobart 10-7 today at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, NY. This game was originally set for yesterday afternoon, but inclement weather forced the game to be moved to today. It also caused the game to be moved indoors to the Dome and i doubt any of the players are complaining.

Cornell was led by Rob Pannell (2g, 3a), Scott Austin (2g), Ryan Hurley (2g) and Mitch Mcmichael (2g).

Hobart was led by Doug shiver (2g) and Kevin Curtin (2g).

Hobart's next game is March 6th at Colgate and Cornell plays on March 2nd at Canisius.

The Edmonton Rush visited the usually not-so friendly confines of the Blue Cross Arena for the first time ever on Saturday night and the escaped with a hard-fought 12-11 National Lacrosse League win over the Rochester Knighthawks. Andy Secore took home game MVP honors with his hat trick, including the winner in overtime. Rochester is not an easy place to win if you don’t play for the home team, but the Rush maintained their composure and never panicked despite never holding a lead during the game, except when it mattered the most.

Rush forward Ryan Powell, who played a few seasons of outdoor ball for the Rattlers, knows just how tough it is to win in Rochester.

I've been really slacking on my updating of this site in recent months. I usually only update it every month or so. Sadly, now I've become so lazy that I'll probably just post links to site I wrote for and you can find my most recent articles yourself.

Sid Smith started his National Lacrosse League career with the Rochester Knighthawks the same way he ended his college career: with a win. In his last collegiate game, he helped lead Syracuse University to a come-from-behind overtime victory over Cornell in the NCAA title game. Fast forward to September when Smith was drafted No. 1 overall in the NLL draft by the Knighthawks, and Smith fits in perfectly for a team that lost Regy Thorpe, Troy Bonterre, and Pat Cougevan. Smith made his NLL debut on Saturday night when Rochester defeated Thruway rival Buffalo 10-5 in front of a raucous crowd of 8,192 at the Blue Cross Arena.

It feels like I was just writing my NFL season previews, but now it’s playoff time. Most of the field was set weeks ago, including most of the NFC, but seven teams were battling for the remaining two AFC slots in week seventeen. The Jets and Ravens, two teams who took very different routes to the playoffs ended up taking home the last two wildcard positions.

This season, there were five different champions out of the eight divisions, three of which are in the AFC. There are also six teams making an appearance in the postseason that had an early tee-time at the golf course this time last year.

Kansas is pretty much the consensus choice for #1 in pretty much all rankings. They are the toughest, deepest and most highly touted team in the NCAA…on paper. Regardless of how good we expect Kansas to be, there is a good chance that at least one (if not many) other team(s) will have the #1 ranking at some point during the season. As they say, “That’s why you play the games.” Otherwise, we would just crown Kansas the national champion and the next four months would be might boring (who wants to watch the NBA? I’m a Knicks fan, not me).

I’ve delayed this article for a long time. Some years ago, I promised myself that I wouldn’t write an article about Pumpkin Ales for thefatherlife. My reasoning was because I always felt that a Halloween themed article about beer brewed with flavors of this gourd-like squash was a little bit cliché. It seems like every other beer writer in America is or has written a Pumpkin Ale themed article for Halloween. Well, after some serious deliberation, I’ve changed my mind and have decided that the world needs to know more about this seemingly strange fall brew.

A new season is upon us, but it feels like it was only a few weeks ago when Sid the Kid and the Pittsburgh Penguins pulled the ‘ol switcheroo and beat Niklas Lidstrom and the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 a year after losing 4-2 to the same squad. Evgeni Malkin was the MVP of the Finals as well as the playoffs as a whole. Max Talbot scored the only two goals in game seven, and Marc-Andre Fleury only allowed one goal to secure the clinching game.

But four plus months have passed since the Penguins triumphantly raised the cup. With the drop of the puck last week, the ’09-’10 season has begun, a season full of hope as well as dreams of Stanley Cup glory for all thirty teams. Right now, every team is still in playoff contention as far as I know.

Terrell Owens is already feeling the heat from an unruly Bills fan. Owens, who’s been out of practice for the last week due to a sore ankle, received flowers and a note calling him a pansy for sitting out. He responded to the gift on his Twitter account, and it is quite obvious that he can handle the haters. Owens response was @terrellowens “Just wanted 2 say thanx again 2 whomever sent the flowers, my dorm room needed the touch! i may twitpic the flowers!” It remains to be seen how Owens handles “fans” like this if the Bills are out of the playoff picture in December.

I’m no fan of taking a nine-iron to a deceased thoroughbred, but as a Red Sox fan I felt that I needed to chime in on the whole “steroids” discussion. Captain Clutch, David Ortiz, the man who was one of the key components that ended eighty-six years of misery in Boston, tested positive for something (we don’t know what) illegal in 2003. What’s the deal with flavored beers? It seems like the biggest trend in recent brewing is the flavored beer. What’s a flavored beer, you say? It’s taking a nice honest brew like pale ale or wheat beer and adding a fruit (or other) flavor to it. I’ve tasted many styles and brands that have had fruit flavors added in during the brewing process. Some are really good, not overly sweet and still retain a great deal of their original flavors, but others are a cloying mess. I don’t like pouring a beer into my glass only to realize that it tastes more like blue raspberry gum than beer. I don’t need to be afraid that my tongue is going to turn neon blue after a pint.

I’ve talked a lot about the NFL, but the college football season starts around the same time (sometimes earlier). I don’t want to forget about that. My favorite team is and always has been Notre Dame. Maybe that is a bit cliché to say these days, the Fighting Irish are like the Dallas Cowboys of college football. The Cowboys have long been called “America’s Team,” and I believe that Notre Dame is most likely “America’s (college) Team”. What other school has all of their games shown nationally on NBC? Nobody, that’s who. Now if they could only get a little bit better we’d be in business. I can’t handle another home loss to Syracuse.

Come mid-July, Ontario Beach Park will be home to Jet Skiers, wrestlers, volleyball players, skaters, rocking beats and droves of onlookers.

That's because the fourth annual Ontario Beach Sports and Music Festival will be in full swing. (Or is it full spike?)

If you're an adventurous athlete, stop by and compete in one of the events. If you're not, come down and cheer on the athletes; admission for spectators is free.

Here's everything else you need to know about the event:

Where? Ontario Beach Park at Lake and Beach avenues in Charlotte.

When? Saturday and Sunday, July 18 and 19.

Description: The festival will be a combination of world-class sporting events and DJs spinning hits both days.

The International Jet Sports Boating Association's Toyota Water Jam will pit hundreds of top watercross competitors from the United States and Canada.

Meanwhile, the USA Wrestling's Beach National Championship and the New York Outdoor Volleyball Association's Corona Extra Beach Volleyball series will take over dry land.

The wrestling tournament will determine which team goes to the FILA World Beach Wrestling Championships in Bulgaria on Aug. 29 and 30.

Interested wrestlers can register to compete at www.themat.com.

The Corona Extra Volleyball series will consists of more than 100 men and women in paired teams. Winning teams will get a chance to compete in the Corona Extra Beach Volleyball Open Sept. 25 through 27 in Manhattan Beach, Calif.

The cost to participate is $30, and players can register at www.monroecountysports.org.

New to the Beach Sports and Music Festival this year: The Krudco Gazebo Getdown SkateJam, a competition that will showcase some of the top skateboarders in the East, including from the Rochester area.

The Major League Baseball All-Star game is next Tuesday at 8 p.m. EST at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. This is one of the only all-star games that I care about in any capacity. It’s most likely because the game is usually close and the winning league gets home-field advantage in the World Series, so they actually have something to amp them up about. Pete Rose never really needed a reason to barrel into catchers back in the day, though. Who am I kidding, I probably actually like it because I’m an AL fan and the American League is 11-0-1 since 1996.

This isn’t completely sports related, but what’s the deal with Twitter? Why is it so addictive, and why am I obsessed with gaining more followers? I’ve only been “tweeting” for a few months, but I already have just over 100 followers at the time I write this. Personally, I don’t know why anyone would want to follow me. I guess if you are a fan of my writing (who isn’t?), my twitter account is a good place to check out my most recent work. It’s also a great place to read such amazing musings as “I just realized that my new cologne smells like pee.” It’s true; I’ve since changed to a different brand.

Twitter and I have a love/hate relationship. I find myself “tweeting” at odd times about odd topics, hoping that someone out there might read it and get a chuckle out of it. I try to keep it short and sweet, and I’m doing my best to update my Twitter account on a daily basis. I’m not going crazy like Chad OchoCinco or Terrell Owens, who seem to update their accounts every 20 seconds. If you want to follow me on Twitter, check me out @chrisosburn. Something amazing happened on Wednesday afternoon at about 4 p.m. You were probably at work and missed it, or maybe you’re just like most Americans and don’t follow soccer. Well, the U.S. Men’s soccer team beat Spain 2-0 in the second round of the Confederations Cup in South Africa. If you don’t know, that’s a pretty freaking big upset. Prior to the game, Spain hadn’t allowed a goal in the tournament, held a record tying thirty-five game unbeaten streak and had won fifteen straight games.

Did I mention that they are currently the #1 ranked team in the world FIFA rankings? USA is generously ranked #14 and had rarely ever showed up for big tournaments in the past. Obviously, this isn’t the World Cup, but regardless of their effort in the championship on Sunday, USA and its supporters should be overjoyed with this recent effort and excited for next summer’s World Cup.

TheFatherLife.com: NHL Finals Preview.

It’s a rematch of last year’s finals as Pittsburgh and Detroit battle for the Stanley Cup starting on May 30th. This is the first Finals rematch since the 83-84 season. Last season, the Red Wings used timely goals and stout defense to defeat the Penguins 4-2 in the best of seven series. This year, they’ll give it another go.

Apparently, the real conference finals should have actually been the conference semifinals. Both Pittsburgh and Detroit needed seven games to defeat Washington and Anaheim respectively. The actual conference finals were a different story altogether. The Penguins, led by the dynamic and youthful combination of Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby (28 points each in the playoffs) easily dispatched the far overmatched Carolina Hurricanes 4-0. The Chicago Blackhawks made the Western finals slightly more interesting by only losing 4-1 to Detroit.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year again. No, not Christmas time, it’s barbeque time. Since I live in the northeast, I figure that I only have about four or so months of really nice weather for grilling and I’ll do my darndest to take advantage of it. I have a nice front porch with large steps that are the perfect place to set up my grill. Nothing beats burgers, sausages, and some mustard potato salad on a beautiful, sunny spring day. But what should you wash it all down with?

There are numerous beverage choices that match up well with the picnic set. Green Tea is delicious and full of anti-oxidants, Kool-Aid (and the ensuing sugary mustache) is a nostalgic remembrance of our youth, and sports drinks have those wacky electrolytes that are supposed to be good for us, but there’s nothing I would rather drink while enjoying a great burger than a frosty beer...

Barbecue lovers are in for a finger-licking treat this weekend when the Roc City Rib Fest hits Ontario Beach State Park.

In just its second year, the event has been expanded significantly. Last year, it was held in Avon, Livingston County, and drew about 2,000 people and featured six vendors and 13 competitors. The Toronto Nationals haven’t played a game, but they are still technically the defending champions. Last season, as the Rochester Rattlers, they finished 9-3 and led the league in scoring, with 202 goals.

There are many holdovers from last season, but gone are a handful of fan favorites. Mike Levin, Casey Powell, Brett Bucktooth, Alex Smith and Jack Reid are gone. The roster is made up primarily of former Rattlers players.

Ithaca - This game started out as a laugher. Cornell held an 8-1 lead just before the half. Hobart’s Jeff Colburn scored to pull the Statesmen within six as the first half ended. Nobody in the stadium could have guessed that Cornell wouldn’t score another goal for the rest of the game and still end up with a win.

Max Silberlicht was unbeatable in the second half, making seven saves (16 total) while not allowing a single goal. Hobart scored five goals in the second half, but it wasn’t enough. The clock ran out on the Statesmen and Cornell survived (barely) with an 8-7 victory.

Wow, I need to send out a ginormous apology to all of my readers. I have done a downright terrible job picking the outcome of these games. So far, due in large part to my (not-so) spectacular analysis of each side, I’m 1-7 (the lone correct pick was Baltimore over Miami in the wildcard round). Wildcard weekend lived up to the hype. Both Saturday games went down to the wire. Arizona, in its first home game since 1947, took down the young Falcons 30-24. San Diego won the coin toss in overtime and defeated Indianapolis, 23-17, on a Darren Sproles 22 yard touchdown run. Never before have I been surer that the NFL needs to institute the same overtime the NCAA uses. Even though experts will tell you that if you win the overtime coin toss you are only 52% likely to win the game, it still doesn’t seem fair to me. I don’t like that a coin flip can pretty much decide if a team moves on in the post season...
